    1. BillKerwin says:

Memoirs of a Space Traveler isn t really a new book it is the completion of an old book It prints under separate cover all the material from Lem s The Star Diaries 1982 which the original English translation for some unexplained reason left out.Like the rest of The Star Diaries, it is filled with intriguing often totally mad philosophical and scientific theories, and horrific, sometimes poignant, examples of their practical consequences For example, in The Eighteenth Voyage star pilot Ijon Tichy [...]

    2. Pierre Menard says:

    3. Spacewanderer says:

Aside from the last story, which is a bit of a throwaway, Memiors is consistently brilliant Sub story II of Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy is particularly excellent any faith you have in God and or the afterlife will be thoroughly shaken.

    4. Stephen says:

This is the first Lem that I ve been able to get into, but I think I ll give his other work another try after this I ve kept on picking up his stuff since I read in one of John Gardner s books that while they were both alive, or either alive for that matter he considered Lem to be the greatest living writer This is a book of reminisces from the space traveler of the title I kept on picturing the J Peterman from Seinfield telling these stories which made this eminently enjoyable.

    5. Ameer says:

All Hail to Mr Lem.All Hail to Ijon Tichy.

    6. Zach says:

Another excellent collection of Ijon Tichy stories Lem expertly covers many intriguing scientific and metaphysical quandaries throughout Worth a read for Sci Fi fans, anyone looking for a little amusement, or those who likes to think about the nature of life and the universe in general Below are brief summaries thoughts on each story. The Eighteenth VoyageA classic Lem story, Tichy finds himself in charge of a project to correct the creation of the Universe so that the Universe no longer exists o [...]

    7. Lupo says:

    8. Book says:

The title is somewhat misleading when barely any of the stories involve space travel, despite the protagonist s cosmos exloring profession Adventures in Meeting Mad Scientists on My Home Planet would have been a better title and most of the stories involve the nature of sentience and personhoood, from clones, to robotics. The best tales areThe Washing Maching Tragedy and the fun and imagnitive finale Let Us Save the Universe though it s good intentioned message does club you over the head with it [...]

    9. Richard Deem says:

This is a bit like a B side to The Star Diaries The stories in both books were originally published together in Polish the ones in this volume are what was left out of the first and it somewhat shows when you compare the quality of the two The stories are on average pretty short and follow the same fantastical comedic tall tale style as the Star Diaries similar feel to The Cyberiad as well If you re new to Lem then skip this one until you re familiar with his better stuff Even if you re not new [...]

    10. Jennifer says:

This may be my new favorite book by Lem Even than Peace on Earth, even though this is really a collection of short stories rather than a novel These stories range from interesting philosophical quandaries to hilarious social satire, to really, terribly painful social satire Lem s long running character, Ijon Tichy, space traveler, narrates, as he visits scientists whose work he s curious about, entertains visitors looking for investors in their big ideas, stumbles randomly into strange situatio [...]

    11. Rich Meyer says:

A loose knit collection of stories that are, in part, a follow up to Lem s The Futurological Congress, these are all pretty good science fiction tales, if a bit dated They re all a bit quirky and most are pretty damn funny in the end Lem s probably the world s most read science fiction author, yet one hardly known in the USA, mainly because of he s Polish and his work strives to be expanding in terms of literature rather than space opera If you like Philip K Dick, then Stanislaw Lem s books are [...]

    12. Owen says:

Interesting I didn t realize that it was part of a series until I d picked it up, but the chapters are essentially short stories, requiring no prior knowledge of the characters The stories themselves are explorations of human nature and where it might take us once science and technology are further advanced, with Ijon Tichy the space traveler of the title serving as our representative in these explorations The flavor is golden age sci fi, and the universe is sometimes campy for the sake of a goo [...]

    13. Jordan says:

These short stories ranged from mildly amusing to pretty awesome My least favorites were The Twenty Fourth Voyage and The Washing Machine Tragedy Both started out interesting, but managed to lose my attention about halfway through The Eighteenth Voyage also kind of lost me towards the end with all its clever names Lou Cipher is Lucifer etc How amazingly witty , but I liked the idea of the story I really enjoyed the first four stories in Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy though, especially I an [...]

    14. Jacob says:

This companion book toThe Star Diariesis a collection of thought experiments thinly wrapped in funny, even goofy, stories in which the hero witnesses or participates in the work of cranks and mad scientists You know, like time machines, human clones, handheld souls, sentient washing machines, and the creation of the universe Lem s short stories are SF at its purest, or, if you like, philosophy of mind and metaphysics at its most fun.

    15. Eva says:

I read this book in French when I discovered Marseille s public library and every short story was exciting The stories don t just make you awe at what the future has reserved for us at least according to the writer s imagination , they also make you think and not about such blatant subjects as science vs morality bur also science vs human curiousity , reality vs the limits of human imagination , and etc.

    16. Joe says:

This book is basically a primer for modern philosophy and theology told through brilliant short stories that center around odd scientists and their emotionally devastating creations of new technology and life Of course, since it s vaguely framed as stories told by a space traveler it s banished to the sci fi section, when it is in fact a work of art.

    17. John says:

Lem s fascination obsession with the various forms that life can take robotic, crystalline, brains in a jar is explored in great detail in this collection of stories through the adventures of the charming and irascible Ijon Tichy, adventures that range in tone from the absurd and comic to the philosophical to the downright frightening there are a couple good ghost stories here.

    18. Leif says:

These stories were cut from the English version of The Star Diaries , I guess because they all took place on earth Although I am glad to have the complete Tichy memoirs, I was a little disappointed in the translation Kandel s translations are far superior, but the fonts and page layout are better than the HBJ versions of Lem s work that I prefer.

    19. Alberto Grandi says:

    20. Angela Randall says:

Stanislaw Lem is an ingenious sci fi writer who is never at a loss for new ideas This book is full of important lessons for budding scientists lessons we should probably learn before it s too late.

    21. Cody says:

dish washer manufacturers enter arms race to make best washer and they invent one that looks like jane mansfield and people have sex with marry it and then a sink gains sentience and wears owner s clothes and marries old ladies to steal their money wow

    22. Anton says:

The first story is really great and mind blowing, actually it s the core idea of the Matrix movie The rest of the book is much weaker, especially the last chapter Not the greatest Lem s book unfortunately.

    23. Mike says:

Another great volume of short stories featuring Ijon Tichy that completes the original Polish collection of stories though I enjoyed this book even They run the gamut from light and funny to deep and philosophical Highly recommended if you want Lem.

    24. Toby says:

Some great stories in here, a fair bit of religious satire, but also some weaker ones It s a pity the book ends on such a weak note, it leaves a disappointing after taste.

    25. Robert Sokolowski says:

Started out great, but then got into the same philosophy 101 crap that every book seems to be about.

    26. Adrian says:

Science fiction with splashes of intelligent humour perhaps best described as Douglas Adams meets Jorge Luis Borges Delightful.

    27. Jerico says:

Short length Lem, witty and well written, with inventive plots and the kind of odd lyric quality that he shares with PKD Good warm up for longer and challenging Lem.

    28. Patrick\ says:

Memorable Memoirs Tichy, reluctantly, does it best Supurb SciFi.

    29. Jossalyn says:

      read in college

    30. Vohumanu says:

Most of it was forgettable, but the Washing Machine Tragedy was brilliantly written.
